Evolutionary theory that a chimp mated with a pig is pure sausagemeat

 
Despite a new hypothesis, and the evidence of George Orwell's eyes in Animal Farm, humans were not the outcome of a curious hybridisation between pigs and chimps

However, when alerted to the following gem by my correspondent B. C. of Swindon, I really had to investigate. The headline is enough to make one gasp and stretch one's eyes:
'Humans evolved after a female chimpanzee mated with a pig': Extraordinary claim made by American geneticist
it reads.
And, yes, it means precisely what you think it means. It's not one of those headlines in which compression creates whole new universes of possibility, such as

As all three of you will be aware by now, I am mildly interested in the field of human origins, and, in particular, the way this subject is routinely misinterpreted by armchair scientists and the popular prints. Indeed, I have just published a book on that very subject. It's called 'The Accidental Species' and appositely subtitled 'Misunderstandings of Human Evolution'. It's available in the proverbial All Good Bookshops and would make the ideal festive gift for the science geek in your life.
But I digress.
To be fair to the Daily Immigrants Cause Cancer, their piece was balanced, in that it not only included a link to the website of Dr Eugene McCarthy, the geneticist who proposed this unusual idea, but also to a magisterial refutation by P. Z. Myers on his blog Pharyngula.
I hope that in the following précis I am not misrepresenting Dr McCarthy's ideas. In short – if I have it right – he proposes that many years ago, a chimpanzee had carnal relations (look, there's no easy way to say this in a family newspaper) with a pig. And, not only did it have carnal relations, but its union was blessed with issue. By dint of extensive backcrossing between chimps and the F1 hybrid (yes, the piece does include scientific words like 'backcrossing' and 'F1 hybrid') you'd get a chimpy sort of thing with variously piggy features, which came eventually to look like a human being. Simples.
Dr McCarthy supports this hypothesis with a cloven-hoofed approach (did I say 'cloven-hoofed'? I mean 'two-pronged').
The first is to say that hybridization has been much more important in the origin of species than usually assumed. Plants do it all the time. It is rarer in animals, though there are plenty of hybrids between animals which belong to different species, and occasionally between different genera, and some of these hybrids are fertile. In those far-off days when I was a doctorate student, I had to tell the difference between the very similar bones of cows (genus Bos) and bison (genus Bison), individuals of which can occasionally interbreed. And if I had a pound for every time someone asked me how I tell the difference between a buffalo and a bison (you can't wash your hands in a buffalo), I'd have £874. Hybridization between chimp and pig, though, is a much bigger stretch. It requires interbreeding between separate orders of mammal. Chimps are primates, and pigs are artiodactyls (even-toed ungulates). Despite McCarthy's suggestions to the contrary, reports of hybrids between different orders of mammal, though, are, literally, incredible. His suggestion that the platypus is the result of hybridization between mammals and birds – an even bigger ask – seems to rest on a misunderstanding of the inheritance of chromosomes. Although some of the genetics of platypuses seems birdlike, this is much more consistent with its primitive state, and a mark of a shared inheritance between birds and reptiles (preserved in primitive mammals) than direct evidence for miscegenation.
The second is a long list of features we see in pigs which seem to be shared, perhaps uniquely, with humans. These include features of the skin, including relative hairlessness and high fat content; features of the face, including eyebrows, heavy eyelashes and lightly pigmented eyes; a large number of skeletal features perhaps suggestive of a shared bipedal ancestry; a pot-pourri of physiological and cranial attributes, and even some shared features of behaviour, including swimming, extended copulation time, and alcoholism.
If some of this sounds familiar, it should, because it is reminiscent in some ways of the Aquatic-Ape hypothesis, concerning which I wrote in this column a while back.
The Chimp-Pig Hypothesis (P. Z. Myers' name for it is a good deal saltier) resembles the Aquatic Ape hypothesis in that it takes some initial idea, or insight, and then cherry-picks the evidence it needs, from wherever it can, to support it, and discounts anything with which it disagrees.
The biggest counter to the idea is, simply, evolutionary history. The last common ancestor of pigs and people was in all likelihood a small furry creature that lived around 80 million years ago, since when our courses have taken very different turns. Any similarities we have are likely to be relics of our common ancestries; convergences we've independently picked up later; or results of the vicissitudes of Dame Fortune. That pigs provide heart valves that work perfectly well in humans is not evidence of common ancestry – no more than the fact that the only creature other than humans that suffers from leprosy is an armadillo makes us close relatives of that creature.
Despite reports that human flesh tastes like pork, and that the pidgin for human meat might or might not be 'long pig', ultimate insight comes from the study of genomes. The analysis of the pig genome, published in Nature last year and available free does reveal shared similarities with humans – and why not? It shares similarities with many other mammals, too. But there seems no especially close relationship between the pig genome and the human genome, which is what one would expect had some hybridization occurred in the past few million years. The proof of the (black) pudding isn't in the eating.
And if none of that convinces, ask yourself this moral conundrum. If you were a pig, would you actually want to be related to us? As it's the festive season I might get away with some traditional piggeral on this subject, before I wish you and yours a happy Solstice/Hannukah/Christmas/Festival of the Execration of Bakrug the Great Water Lizard (delete as applicable) and a healthy and wealthy New Year:=

ആഫ്രിക്കയില്‍ നിലനിന്ന ആ പ്രാചീന നരവംശം ഏതാണെന്ന് ഗവേഷകര്‍ക്ക് വ്യക്തമല്ല. 'പ്രാചീന നരംവംശം' (early Homo) എന്ന് ഗവേഷകസംഘത്തിലെ ചിലര്‍ അതിനെ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. പത്തുലക്ഷത്തിനും ഇരുപത് ലക്ഷം വര്‍ഷത്തിനും മധ്യേ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന ഹോമോ ഇറക്ടസ് ( Homo erectus ) ആകാം ആ വര്‍ഗമെന്ന് മറ്റ് ഗവേഷകര്‍ പറയുന്നു. യു.എസിലെ ബര്‍ക്കലിയില്‍ കാലിഫോര്‍ണിയ സര്‍വകലാശാലയിലെ ടിം ഡി. വൈറ്റിനെപ്പോലുള്ള പ്രമുഖ നരവംശശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞര്‍ ഈ കണ്ടുപിടിത്തം പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടതാണെന്ന് കരുതുന്നു. മനുഷ്യപരിണാമത്തിന്റെ പ്രാചീനഘട്ടത്തിലെ അവ്യക്തതകള്‍ ഒഴിവാക്കാനുള്ള ഒരു പ്രധാന ചുവടുവെപ്പായി ഇതിനെ അവര്‍ കാണുന്നു

A Heady Find

In the past two decades, excavations at the archaeological site at Dmanisi, Georgia, have revealed hominin fossils from the earliest Pleistocene, soon after the genus Homo first dispersed beyond Africa. Lordkipanidze et al. (p. 326; see the cover) now describe a fossil cranium from the site. Combined with mandibular remains that had been found earlier, this find completes the first entire hominin skull from this period.

Abstract

The site of Dmanisi, Georgia, has yielded an impressive sample of hominid cranial and postcranial remains, documenting the presence of Homo outside Africa around 1.8 million years ago. Here we report on a new cranium from Dmanisi (D4500) that, together with its mandible (D2600), represents the world's first completely preserved adult hominid skull from the early Pleistocene. D4500/D2600 combines a small braincase (546 cubic centimeters) with a large prognathic face and exhibits close morphological affinities with the earliest known Homo fossils from Africa. The Dmanisi sample, which now comprises five crania, provides direct evidence for wide morphological variation within and among early Homo paleodemes. This implies the existence of a single evolving lineage of early Homo, with phylogeographic continuity across continents.

Perhaps the most famous icon of human evolution in modern times may now have to be quietly discarded. For over the last thirty years, the supposedly 3.2 million year old Australopithecus afarensis specimen known as ‘Lucy’ has been boldly proclaimed as the ancestor of all humanity in magazines, television shows, books, newspapers, and museums. However, Tel Aviv University anthropologists have published a study casting serious doubt on Lucy’s role as mankind’s ape ancestor.1 Based on a comparative analysis of jaw bones in living and extinct primates, researchers concluded that Lucy and members of her kind should be ‘placed as the beginning of the branch that evolved in parallel to ours.’ In other words, by evolutionary reasoning, Lucy should no longer be considered to be our direct ancestor. Lucy’s demise falsifies thirty-three years of evolutionary hyperbole and propaganda. Instead, her proper designation as an extinct non-human, the ancestor of other non-human primates, is completely consistent with the predictions of biblical creation.

In the evolutionary model, Lucy was held up as the ideal transitional fossil between ape and man. Only 40% complete, anthropologists speculated that she was a fully bipedal creature possessing the perfect blend of ape-like and human-like anatomical features.2
In the biblical creation model, Lucy is considered an ancient type of ape whose kind was specially created by God on the sixth day of creation about 6,000 years ago. Based on comprehensive skeletal analysis, Lucy and other members of the genus Australopithecus were likely tree-dwelling ape-like creatures who possessed very limited bipedality, as do the living apes of today.

This three-year old ape possessed a distinctly ape-like skull, a hyoid bone virtually identical to that of a chimpanzee (crushing any hopes for speech), a curved finger bone typical of tree dwelling apes, a gorilla-like shoulder blade commonly associated with tree climbing and knuckle walking, and inner ear characteristics that confirm a largely quadrupedal locomotion. Researchers have yet to excavate the feet of this specimen, but creationists predict that this extinct ape likely possessed a laterally projecting big toe and curved toe bones characteristic of the other great apes.
This year’s study further strengthens creationist predictions. Tel Aviv University anthropologists determined that Lucy’s mandibular ramus, or lower jaw bone, not only appears in Australopithecus robustus, but closely resembles that of a gorilla. As a result, the evolutionary researchers concluded that Lucy should no longer be considered man’s direct ancestor. As is typically the case in the field of human evolution, a single bone structure overturns years of grossly exaggerated claims.

Shifting sands of human evolution

For decades, Lucy was declared an indisputable link between humans and apes. Now, she’s joining the ranks of other discarded human ancestors.
No doubt evolutionary anthropologists will replace Lucy with a different candidate for the ancestor of humanity. This will come in the form of a currently known ‘hominid’ specimen or a future, sensational discovery. This is how the game is played. A single tooth, a fragmented jaw bone, or partial skull will throw the evolutionary community into a frenzy of speculation and exaggeration. Magazines, newspapers, television shows, school textbooks, and national museums will spread the latest ‘proof’ of human evolution like wildfire. But as years pass, more and more evidence will come to light, and the so-called ‘proof’ will meet a quiet death.
Winston Churchill once said, ‘Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.’ Simply stated, the evolutionary community continues to repeat the same mistakes over and over again. Three powerful icons of human evolution have turned out to be utter ‘busts’ within the last one hundred years: Piltdown Man, Nebraska Man, and Lucy. The trend could not be any more self-evident. After 100 or so years of intense anthropological investigation, the evolutionary model of human origins has yielded disappointment after disappointment. No clear link between ancient apes and human beings has ever been established. It is high time for a new direction in science.

Christians would do well to learn a lesson from the tenuous nature of scientific consensus. Today’s consensus can be tomorrow’s footnote. For decades, Neandertal was depicted as an ape-like, brutish animal. Now, a new consensus is rapidly emerging. Neandertals are fast becoming recognized as fully intelligent, fully functional human beings. For decades, Lucy was declared an indisputable link between humans and apes. Now, she’s joining the ranks of other discarded human ancestors. Those who repeatedly appeal to the scientific consensus of the day often put themselves in a precarious position when the consensus is eventually overturned.
As Christians, we are not to appeal to scientific consensus as the chief arbiter of historical and scientific investigation. Instead, we are to remain faithful to the divinely inspired, inerrant Word of God, which provides us with the true history of the world. The Bible alone provides us with the proper historical framework in which to conduct our scientific study of the natural world. Had scientists studied Lucy through a biblical lens, she never would have had to suffer such an ignominious demotion.

Was Lucy bipedal?

In the alleged process of humans evolving from primates, evolutionists have considered the most important event to be the evolution of bipedal locomotion. This event is even more important than the enlargement of the brain or the fabrication of stone tools. In fact, in many evolutionary scenarios, bipedalism is thought to be the cause of the enlargement of the brain and stone tool making.
The discovery of ‘Lucy’ (Australopithecus afarensis) in 1973 by Carl Johanson’s team, and the discovery of the Laetoli Footprints in 1978 by Mary Leakey’s team, both dated at more than three million years, was welcome confirmation to evolutionists of the early evolution of bipedalism. They based their case on the fact that A. afarensis fossils were also found at Laetoli, and that the only fossil reconstruction of the A. afarensis foot was arched, and hence compatible with the Laetoli Footprints. Thus, for over twenty years we have been told, both in the scientific and in the popular literature, that Lucy was bipedal and that she is what our evolutionary ancestor at that time looked like—or close to it.
Finally, a report in the August 2005 Scientific American suggests that there might be a problem. William E.H. Harcourt-Smith (American Museum of Natural History) and Charles E. Hilton (Western Michigan University) challenge Lucy’s bipedality. They claim that the fossil reconstruction of the A. afarensis foot is based on a mixture of fossils, some from the 3.2 million year old A. afarensis collection, and some from the 1.8 million year old Homo habilis collection. Specifically, they claim that one of the bones, the navicular, used to determine that the A. afarensis foot was arched, actually was a Homo habilis fossil foot bone, not an A. afarensis fossil foot bone.
Presenting their findings at the seventy-fourth Annual Meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists in Milwaukee, 6–9 April 2005, these researchers state again what has been known for years—that the Laetoli Footprints are virtually indistinguisable from modern arched footprints made by humans who are habitually unshod.
Harcourt-Smith and Hilton then studied the naviculars of A. afarensis, H. habilis, chimpanzees, and gorillas. The measurements of the H. habilis navicular were within the modern human range. The A. afarensis navicular, on the other hand, was very much like that of the flat-footed apes, meaning that it was very unlikely that A. afarensis had an arched foot, as humans have. They conclude that ‘A. afarensis almost certainly did not walk like us or, by extension, like the hominids at Laetoli.’1
My personal file of scientific articles on A. afarensis bipedality is very thick. Yet, in over twenty years, to my knowledge, no evolutionist until now has mentioned that the relationship between the A. afarensis foot, the Laetoli Footprints, and thus the ‘proof’ of A. afarensis bipedality was based upon a faulty reconstruction. It is hard for me, an outsider, to know whether or not this is a case of outright deception. Was this matter known, but not mentioned, by paleoanthropologists generally? Or was it known by only a very few who were involved in the reconstruction of Lucy’s foot? It is certainly a striking example of the failure of evolutionists to inform the public regarding the actual state of the evidence in the most important ‘alleged event’ of human evolution. I have documented elsewhere many other cases of shabby scholarship or outright deception by evolutionists.2
It is significant that bipedalism authority, C. Owen Lovejoy (Kent State University), does not dispute the fact that the A. afarensis fossil foot reconstruction consists of bones from several different species. In spite of this problem, he defends Lucy’s bipedality by saying that even flat-footed modern humans can walk normally.
Harcourt-Smith and Hilton call for a new fossil foot reconstruction based only on A. afarensis fossils in order to determine whether or not A. afarensis was truly bipedal. If not, they suggest two other possibilities:
  • that a fossil species known as Australopithecus anamensis made the Laetoli footprints, even though we have no fossil foot bones of this species, or
  • that the Laetoli footprints were made by a species yet undiscovered.
For evolutionists, it’s just a short step from science to science-fiction.

Donald Johanson: Was Lucy a Hoax?

Did Donald Johanson perpetrate a hoax upon us when he discovered Lucy?

This question is of personal importance to me. It's the slander that was passed on to me and many others by Dr. Robert Gentry on television in 1995.
I can't remember the exact wording, but basically the story went like this one from The Forerunner:
But hold on, the story gets better. Dr. Johanson gave a lecture at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, Nov. 20, 1986, on Lucy and why he thinks she is our ancestor. It included the ideas already mentioned and that Lucyís femur and pelvis were more robust than most chimps and therefore, "could have" walked upright. After the lecture he opened the meeting for questions. The audience of approximately 800 was quiet so some creationists asked questions. Roy Holt asked; "How far away from Lucy did you find the knee?" (The knee bones were actually discovered about a year earlier than the rest of Lucy). Dr. Johanson answered (reluctantly) about 200 feet lower (!) and two to three kilometers away (about 1.5 miles!). Continuing, Holt asked, ìThen why are you sure it belonged to Lucy?î Dr. Johanson: "Anatomical similarity." (Bears and dogs have anatomical similarities).
Is this true? Did Donald Johanson find a knee far from Lucy's body, then deceive scientists and the masses alike into believing that it belonged to the same skeleton?
Did he then only admit it when confronted by creationists in 1986, almost 12 years to the day after Lucy's discovery?

The Truth

If you know anything about creationist charges against scientists, you will not be surprised to find out that the answer to those questions is no.
In 1981, five years before the questions from creationists, Donald Johanson published a book with Maitland Edey called Lucy: The Beginnings of Humankind, giving the details of the discovery of Lucy, and the A. afarensis knee joint found over a mile from Lucy's body.
Worse, the knee, found in 1973 before Lucy was even found, has been insignificant since 1975, when the "first family" was found. The "first family" is a collection of parts from 13 Australopithecus afarensis individuals, and it includes at least one knee joint.
This was all known long before the 1986 accusations against Dr. Johanson, and it was certainly known long before the above-quoted Forerunner article, which is dated 2007.

Conclusion

Australopithecus afarensis is one of the most attested species in the fossil record. Hundreds of fossils have been found.
Evidence of its bipedality is extensive, including its pelvis, the position of its sacrum, the angle from the femur to the knee, the connections for knee extensors on its leg bones, and the location of its big toe. Donald Johanson neither needed to lie about the knee joint he discovered in 1973, nor is there any evidence that he ever did lie about it.
In fact, he published a book in 1981 describing everything that the anti-evolutionists claimed to have discovered by questioning in 1986.

 Remember Ida, the fossil discovery announced last May with its own book and TV documentary? A publicity blitz called it "the link" that would reveal the earliest evolutionary roots of monkeys, apes and humans.

Experts protested that Ida wasn't even a close relative. And now a new analysis supports their reaction.

In fact, Ida is as far removed from the monkey-ape-human ancestry as a primate could be, says Erik Seiffert of Stony Brook University in New York.

He and his colleagues compared 360 specific anatomical features of 117 living and extinct primate species to draw up a family tree. They report the results in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

Ida is a skeleton of a 47 million-year-old cat-sized creature found in Germany. It starred in a book, "The Link: Uncovering Our Earliest Ancestor."

Ida represents a previously unknown primate species called Darwinius. The scientists who formally announced the finding said they weren't claiming Darwinius was a direct ancestor of monkeys, apes and humans. But they did argue that it belongs in the same major evolutionary grouping, and that it showed what an actual ancestor of that era might have looked like.

The new analysis says Darwinius does not belong in the same primate category as monkeys, apes and humans. Instead, the analysis concluded, it falls into the other major grouping, which includes lemurs.

Experts agreed.

"This is a rigorous analysis based on many features," said Eric Sargis, an anthropology professor at Yale. He said he'd found the argument of the Darwinius researchers unconvincing, so the new result came as no surprise.

In fact, it confirms what most scientists think, said David Begun, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Toronto.

Jorn Hurum of the Natural History Museum in Oslo, Norway, an author of the Ida paper, said he welcomed the new analysis.

Darwinius is an example of a group of primates called adapoids, and "we are happy to start the scientific discussion" about what Ida means for where adapoids fit on the primate family tree, he wrote in an e-mail.
